Texas Insurance License: The Hub
Texas runs the biggest insurance-licensing pipeline in the country — roughly 197,000 license applications a year (Texas Department of Insurance). If you're testing in Texas, this is your page: the steps, the exam, and the Texas laws the test actually asks about.
The Texas path, step by step
- Choose your line. General Lines Property & Casualty, or General Lines Life & Health (many Texas candidates take both, one at a time).
- Prepare for the exam. Your score is the gate. Texas candidates study the national concepts plus Texas-specific law — the mix the exam is built from.
- Book with Pearson VUE. Texas licensing exams are administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers across the state (and online where offered). Book once your mock scores say you're ready — not before.
- Get fingerprinted. Texas requires a fingerprint-based background check as part of licensing; schedule it so results don't delay your application.
- Apply through TDI. After you pass, submit your license application to the Texas Department of Insurance (via Sircon) and pay the application fee.
- Get appointed. To actually sell, an insurer appoints you. Agencies hiring new agents handle this with you — your job is to arrive licensed.
Exact fees, forms, and current rules live in the community's Start Here roadmap — and always confirm them at tdi.texas.gov, because TDI updates them.
What makes the Texas exam different
Most of the exam is the national core every state tests: risk, policy provisions, property and casualty basics, life and health fundamentals. Layered on top is Texas law — the Texas Insurance Code, TDI's rules, unfair-practices and prompt-payment standards, and Texas-only mechanisms like the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) and the FAIR Plan. Candidates who study only national material walk into that section unprepared. The community's Texas module exists for exactly that gap.
